Four statements.
If you are talking about my cat, they are acceptable.
If you are talking about my mother, they are not.
Um, HELLO?

In BOTH cases you are talking about a major loss for ME. Most people would never say such a thing about my mother, but think nothing about saying it about the cat that has been with me for over 14 years. People should really stop and think a moment BEFORE they speak...try to put yourself in somebody else's shoes for just a second before you say something hurtful and Unthinking.

You TORTURED and KILLED a tiny, 4-5 pound kitten because it was "bothering" your 200+ pound self. If you can justify killing a kitten that could have been picked up and put in a drawer or closet with that line of bullshit, then I can't imagine what you would do with a teething infant or toddler that needs a nap. Pity Michigan doesn't have a death penalty, as I really don't want you on the streets again EVER--you are a danger to Society and have forfeited your "rights" as a "human being". That said, I wish with all the power that I have that you "bother" a very big man while you are in jail and he shanks you for it. Blessed Be...

Police: Teen said he killed kitten because 'it was bothering me'

Mind you, he is 19-years old. He is an ADULT. Previous articles about this hideous crime tell how the woman returned home with her 13-year old daughter to find her house had been invaded and robbed and the family pet viciously killed. It wasn't enough to break into these people's home and ruin their sense of security. It wasn't enough to steal things that they had worked hard to get...he and his friends had to hurt a defenseless little KITTEN. Several big "men" just couldn't handle a ball of fluff wanting to play. I am so very glad that the little girl had not been left home alone, because I don't want to even imagine what those monsters might have done to her. This crime is so blatantly heinous, that four years is NOT enough. The fact that the breaking and entering gets a higher penalty than a crime that requires sociopath tendencies is, to say the very least, disturbing.

What's wrong with Society today? How about the fact that Child Molesters and Animal Abusers get nothing more than a slap on the wrist* and are then released into the unsuspecting population to commit their crimes again and again. The Law does not protect the Innocent, the Victim. A dog that bites more than once is euthanized. A "person" who has no respect for life, who has proven they will commit atrocities again and again by becoming a "repeat offender" should be removed from the gene pool.

In many states Child Molesters and Animal Abuse both carry maximum sentences of no more than five years. Sure five years in prison is not a party, but, they are not rehabilitated, they are simply set loose upon the unsuspecting over and over again. Ray Bradbury wrote a short story about a man branded on his face for the crime he committed. If you are not going to remove them, then at least mark them so we all know what--not who, WHAT*--is walking among us.

I miss Sabbats, I forget birthdays, hell, even Christmas seems to sneak up on me and take me by surprise. However, August 8^th, for me, is Sacred. It is the anniversary of two very special souls leaving this world and, poignantly most memorable to me, mostly leaving my life. I don’t even have to think about the date approaching—I become increasing melancholy without having to so much as look at a calendar. My soul remembers this date and holds it Holy. How Ironic that I would lose Lou on the anniversary of Bunny’s passing! You see, if not for Bunny, I more than probably would have never met Lou—we both had diabetic cats, we both found the Feline Diabetes Message Board and the rest, as they so often say, is History.

You can say or believe whatever you want about people-you-meet-on-the-internet…*I* know the folks that I have met because of chronically ill cats are some of the most AMAZING human beings that anyone could be privileged to know. They are some of the most loving, supportive, patient, giving people I have ever met. They have more courage, strength, persistence and intelligence in their little fingers than most Goddesses have in their entire bodies. “Not Possible” and/or Failure are unacceptable to these women. We were given diabetic cats because of these traits…and so that we could meet each other. Feline Diabetes was a Blessing.

This post was originally very different…

but even though Lou is on the other side, I can still hear her (my family is known for hearing the dead) and the original version isn’t what SHE wanted. I am writing this New-Improved-Version with Lou whispering in my ear, leaning over my shoulder and watching me type. You see, this was going to be a sad tribute to two souls that damn near burst my heart to lose…but she says that she and Bunny don’t want that…”Celebrate our LIVES, Kimber, not the tragedy you feel about our deaths...”

Bunny always ATE Life, Devoured it like the tastiest meal set before him. Lou was just beginning to learn how to do that when her cancer came. The fact is, they both did

EAT

Life…

Even if it was just for a little while. Grab everything with both hands.

Eat chocolate or cheese and splurge once in a while on the expensive wine or the fruit that is out-of-season but you are so hungry for…

Let the dust bunnies pile up—they will still be here tomorrow…you might not.

HUG people, HUG those you love EVERY chance you get—Lou and Bunny were both Huggers.

Read all the books you can.

Watch all the movies you can.

Don’t forget to talk to people…it’s easy to go into your own world, but those we love, human and animal, are so important and so very temporary.

Take NOTHING for granted. Each day is a Gift…whether it’s a bad day or a good day, it is still a day that at least one special thing happened—you heard a good joke, you saw a rainbow, you felt rain on your face, you held a cat while he purred…these are all brief blessings, but should be counted as blessings no matter what else goes wrong.

No matter what happens, there are always people who love you and care about you and whether you know it or not, you make a difference in their lives.

It’s not easy to be brave…and it’s OK not to be—that’s why we have friends, to carry us when our legs are too tired to stand.

One Brave Woman and One Brave Cat. I will never be able to sum up in mere words what they taught me or what they will forever mean to me. All I can say is that I will be Eternally Grateful that these two Very Special Souls touched MY Life…and changed it forever. Blessed Be!!!

It's Always Hardest to Say Good Bye

At 2:00 am he was gobbling treats. This morning he was by the water bowl. Only drank about half his tuna juice, licked up a few bites of food--even though I gave him four different flavors--and ate none of his treats. He did not even ask to go out--although I will take him out and stay with him. He loved the sunshine and the gardens. He staggers when he walks. Although he does not show any signs of being in pain, his body is shutting down. We have an appointment for 6:30 today.

I think I am going to have to put Woody down this week. The lump on his nose never did go back down this last time. He is still eating good, but seems dehydrated, and NO, I cannot give him sub-q, he is NOT that kind of cat. I put meds in his eye yesterday because it was runny, and that looks better, but he is NOT himself and is a bit wobbly on his feet. For the last few days he has gone outside without even having breakfast. He sleeps in one of the flower beds until supper time and then comes in and eats about 3 ounces or so of canned food. Tonight I gave him tuna water, which he loves.

I had hoped he would make Bunny and Louise's anniversary in August. Anubis died 7/24/08. I knew he was sick, we found the tumor a year ago and I had recently noticed his motor skills deteriorating like Annie's did as the cancer spread into her brain, but....I'm still typing through tears. I guess you are never ready for these things.

He didn't even know how to play when we got him, but I have pictures of him playing with toys months after we took him in. If those assholes had bothered to get him neutered, he probably never would have gotten the FIV...instead they threw him out to live on the streets for seven years...We managed to give him two years of love, warmth, security, food and water. At least he got to experience that much. I know he knows he is loved.

I'm sorry, I haven't been on much. I just thought you would like to know that Mimi, the elderly cat we adopted six months ago, died.

Thursday she was hitting me for milk, but had been more picky than usual about eating. Thursday evening she wasn't acting right. I did get her to eat some treats and some milk but that was all. Friday morning she was staggering and I took her in. They decided early renal failure, gave her 100 ml of ringers and a B-12 shot and sent her home with SubQ kit and Clavamox. I knew she was not going to be OK. I took her out in the garden for about an hour. At 1:30 last night I saw her go into the living room. I found her there under a bookshelf this morning at 5, she had been dead a while...
Charlie didn't want to tell the old lady she is dead. The lady sent Christmas Presents for Mimi and the other cats and had called once to check on Mimi. The daughter had lied when she said that the lady didn't love the cat. *I* think it would be best to cremate Mimi and give the lady most of her ashes.

She died the day after Annie's Wing Anniversary. Less than 3 months after Misha. We only had her six months, but it was long enough to love her, long enough to miss her.

Safe Journey, Little One.

In the last ten days we have had tuna, and ham, and chicken and cream...and Mimi got a little bit of each one. I feel a bit better knowing she got some of her favorite foods during her last days.

He was with a couple other guys who also looked like they belonged on MTV and they were passing out fliers for a church easter egg hunt. I smiled and thanked the boys and told them I don't have any children OR Grandchildren (as they so kindly suggested was possible)...

Yes, I went over by two.
It was actually difficult to make it even just 17.... When you love music and it is a huge portion of your life, many songs mean something...you are lucky if whole albums hold importance. They say scent is the sense that links to memory, but for me, it has always been MUSIC...A song can transport me through time with no effort at all. I pinpoint time lines by music/song releases. If we watch Cold Case and I miss the date at the beginning, I can still tell the "when" if it was within the last 60 or so years, because they always play the music from that time.

Each of these albums is a like a snapshot in the scrapbook of my life.
For Example: Jagged Little Pill. We drove out to Ocean City, MD for our honeymoon (also visited Salem Mass and McGuire AFB on that trip) for our honeymoon. On your way to OC there is a long stretch of road that seems to take forever because by now you have been driving for 11 hours and you can smell the sea and all you want now is to HURRY UP and get to your hotel so you can change clothes and dive into the waves...we listened to that album with windows down and moon roof wide open and drove as fast as traffic would allow...and every time I hear one of those songs, I am back on the road to the ocean and a cheesy hotel room right on the boardwalk directly underneath what used to be Tavern By The Sea...

Last week, while visiting Dr. John Allred's office, I noticed a short article posted on the bulletin board and started reading it. The article really got to me and I decided to do today's column about it. Anyone who has ever loved an animal, whether a dog, cat, bird, ferret, or whatever animal should find it very moving because most of us have heard the comment, "it's just an animal."

Here it is, word for word, as it is perfect as written. At the end of the article was the notation, "author unknown." There was no mention of the publication in which it appeared.

"From time to time people tell me, "Lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "That's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for "just a dog." Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed with my only company being "just a dog," and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were those brought about by "just a dog." In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day.

"If you, too, think it's "just a dog," you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of "just a dog," I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

"For me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog." It's an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

"I hope that someday people can understand it's not "just a dog." It's the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man or woman."

"So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog," smile, because they "just don't understand."

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the person who wrote this is not known. It is difficult to determine whether the writer may have been a man or woman. Doesn't matter, really, as it seems quite clear the writer is an individual who loved and appreciated animals, especially dogs.

If readers have ever made a genuine connection with any animal that shared a home and life with a person, they will understand the genuine bond that can develop between the two. When the animal lives to a ripe old age (hopefully), it will at some point become ill and die. That is the time we all know "it isn't just a dog."

I'm not sure if this is just Michigan. They did say on the news that if you notice a couple odd, small withdraws or deposits, for anywhere from fifteen cents to five dollars, you need to start watching. The thieves do the small amount to check and see if your account is active. Once those clear, all hell breaks lose.

Credit Card Breach May Affect Thousands

DETROIT -- Customers who have used their credit cards at thousands of retailers and restaurants are at risk of a security breach.

Payments processor Heartland Payment Systems Inc. said the system they used to process Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover Card transactions was breached last year.

Local 4 has learned the company handles only small businesses and it has a strong presence across the Metro Detroit area.

Primary local clients are restaurants, convenient stores, liquor stores, independent clothing and houseware boutiques. The Wall Street Journal reported the data compromised included card numbers, expiration dates and internal bank codes, all of which could be used to duplicate cards.

Robert Baldwin, Heartland's president and chief financial officer, said it was too early to quantify the data stolen. "We understand that this incident may be the result of a widespread global cyber fraud operation, and we are cooperating closely with the United States Secret Service and Department of Justice," Baldwin said in the statement.

Heartland said letters will be sent out to customers whose credit cards have been hacked.

Customers should examine their monthly statements and report any suspicious activity to card issuers, company officials said.

Heartland Payment Systems Inc. has established a Web site, www.2008breach.com to provide information and advises cardholders to examine their monthly statements and report suspicious activity to card issuers.

Chase Bank is one of the establishments affected by the breach and released this statement: "We are presently conducting a thorough investigation of the impact on Chase customers."

Other institutions, like the Michigan Catholic Credit Union, have already started to notify members their accounts may have been breached.Heartland would not release to Local 4 its list of Michigan merchants but instead directed anyone with questions to their Web site.Cardholders can also call 866-399-6228.

1.5 to 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast--boiled or poached and cut into bite-size pieces
1 16 oz package broccoli florets (I use Kroger Brands Steamer)
1 can low fat, low sodium cream of chicken soup--prepare according to package directions
1 box stuffing--prepared according to package directions OR make your own using bread crumbs
Cheese (I use Kraft cheese slices--you want something that melts well. The original recipe calls for Velveeta, but that has hydrogenated fat in it, so I don't use it any more.)

Spread chicken in 8 x 11 glass baking dish. Spread broccoli on top. Pour soup over all of it. Add a layer of cheese. Spread stuffing over top. Bake at about 350 degrees F for about 1/2 hour or until the cheese has melted to create a sauce (you'll be able to see through the glass that you have an orange sauce kinda thang goin' on).

It looks disgusting. It smells heavenly. It tastes like seconds or even third helpings. It tastes great the next day, even though the stuffing is a bit soggy. The first time I had it, a friend was making it and she had no name for it. I said it looked like rat puke and the name stuck...

TOASTING HIS WIFE

I have to say how Freaking Refreshing it is to say something positive about a big company's customer service!

minmay7 and my brother got Charlie a six disc CD changer for his truck as his Christmas/December 31 Birthday present. Unfortunately, it's not compatible with his stereo. I dug the packing slip out of the box today and my heart sank. She bought it in mid-November and the return policy is 30-days. However, as a wise man once told me, "Blow a nickle! The worst thing that can ever happen to you for asking for something is that you might be told 'no'."

Not only are they giving us credit for the full purchase price (they did offer to credit minmay7 's credit card instead) but they are also paying for return shipping!!! Holy Shit! I didn't think anyone did that any more! All of this was no questions asked, no problem and the girl was cheerful and friendly...and obviously in the U.S.A.!!! Needless to say, I will be using crutchfield.com myself if I ever have occasion to buy something else they sell/carry.

Pizza Caserole

I've got errands to run and a stop at the grocer should be one of them. However, I just don't feel like loading all the bottles and bags for recycling into the car and then standing there feeding it all in to the machines...so I am putting off grocery store until tomorrow. However, I do still have to make dinner. I am tired of the same ol' crap every day. Allrecipes.com sent me this in an e-mail this morning and I happen to have all the ingredients on hand. Woot!

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

2 cups uncooked egg noodles
1/2 pound lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 cup sliced pepperoni sausage
16 ounces pizza sauce
4 tablespoons milk
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Cook noodles according to package directions.
In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef with the onion, garlic and green bell pepper. Drain excess fat. Stir in the noodles, pepperoni, pizza sauce and milk, and mix well. Pour this mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 20 minutes, top with the cheese, then bake for 5 to 10 more minutes.

ETA: What I did Different: I made more noodles than it suggested--which means I used two 14oz jars of pizza sauce. I used a whole package of turkey peperoni as I didn't have any beef--some was mixed in like recipe and some went on top. I mixed about a cup of cheese into the whole thing. Per one of the reviews, I baked some of the pepperoni on top -- I also added mushrooms to one side since Charlie doesn't like them, and just cooked those on top. I baked a bit longer than she said to crisp up the pepperoni on top and then again to get the cheese more brown. I only used 1/2 cup of cheese on top.

It was good. I will use a thicker noodle next time--like maybe penne or rotini. Several reviewers did this and liked it better.

I Thought My Worries Were Over...

Not my real worries! Just the very minor one of having several shows I want to watch all on at the same time. My mother tried to remedy this. She got us a DVR for Christmas. All was mostly right with the world--I did have to watch a show on the living room T.V. one day, but no biggie***. I just looked at the January Schedule for New T.V....Lie to Me, Lost, and Criminal Minds are all on at the same time on the same night. Don't get me wrong, this is by far not the worst of my problems, in fact it rates pretty freakin' low on the scale, but it is a little disappointing. I don't watch very many shows. Fringe, Lost, Medium, Criminal Minds, Cold Case, The Office, 30 Rock, House, Bones, CSI and now Lie to Me are the only ones with "scheduled series recordings". I catch some shows on rerun when I can't sleep, or forget they are on and miss them. It's a small, cheap, guilty pleasure to fall into somebody else's life for a while, which is also why I read books.

I'm not missing Lost and Charlie and I both really LOVE Tim Roth. I guess I will have to add Criminal Minds to my "catch it on rerun" list...

***It was Superstars of Dance. We had a movie recording because they gave us free Premium Channels for a bit and were taping Cold Case--you can only record two shows at a time and you have to watch at least one of them while it's taping/on. That two hours of watching "professional" dancers who are supposedly the best from each country is two hours of my life I will never get back. What a sad, sorry display that was! NOT watching that again!
